Three rivers, a lake, a reservoir, and a trout stream are located within 5 miles of the Buckhorne. The Cowpasture River and the Jackson River meet to form the James River, and Wilson Creek, a designated Virginia trout stream, flows from Douthat Lake into the Jackson River.  A trout-stocked reservoir owned by the Town of Clifton Forge also provides good fishing.  The Buckhorne sells fishing tackle and live bait, and its campers may fish in the trout stream that runs through the campground.
